INTRODUCTION

For a climate transition, there is no way around a construction transition. To achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the principle of the circular economy must be the basis of every planning process. Hardly any other building material is as suitable for sustainable construction as steel: due to its high strength, it can support entire high-rise buildings even with low construction weight and filigree structures. When these are dismantled at a later point, the steel used can be separated and recycled or even reused. Already today, 11% of collected construction steels are directly reused in new buildings, the rest can be converted back into high-quality steel as scrap – without any loss of quality or even with an increase in steel quality. In the competition among sustainable building materials, steel is already the clear winner, because natural resources are preserved in the long term. Those who build with steel today are considered pioneers in sustainability and demonstrate responsibility for our future. One thing is certain: steel installed today will be recycled or reused in a climate-neutral way at the end of a building’s life cycle. Steel wins not only because of its material properties, but also because steel construction, as a flexible construction method, addresses the requirements of the future.
